Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.7

Apple on Tuesday released the latest update for its Leopard operating system, Mac OS X 10.5.7, bringing with it more than 20 bug fixes as well as a number of security updates. Among the improvements in the update are additional RAW image support for third-party cameras, improved performance of video playback for recent Macs with Nvidia graphics chips, and resolution for an issue with the Dvorak keyboard layout in 10.5.6. Intel Invests $12 Million to Create Visual Computing Research Center in Europe

Intel Corporation is investing $12 million to create a new research center that will explore advanced graphics and visual computing technologies. Opening today, the Intel® Visual Computing Institute is located at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. The investment, to be made over 5 years, represents Intel’s largest European university collaboration.

Visual computing is the analysis, enhancement and display of visual information to create life-like, real-time experiences and more natural ways for people to interact with computers and other devices. Applications include games, medical imaging and interactive 3-D data models used in areas such as scientific research and financial services. Acer Joins Open Patent Alliance to Advance Mobile 4G WiMAX Innovation

Further advancing mobile WiMAX worldwide, Acer Inc. (TSE: 2353) has joined the Open Patent Alliance (OPA), a group dedicated to offering intellectual property rights (IPR) solutions that support the development and widespread adoption of WiMAX. The OPA was formed in June 2008 by members of the WiMAX ecosystem. Watching sports while drinking can lead to some testosterone-fueled disputes. When one’s favorite player or team gets called into question, it often doesn’t take much more for the situation to escalate to throwing blows across the bar. This situation begs the question, if you had to choose one athlete to join your corner in the scuffle, who would it be? We have a few suggestions of the biggest badasses in sports, past and present.

Look at Mike Vallely in this video, remember don’t mess with water drinking skateboarder ;-)

Vallely has been skateboarding professionally since the mid 80s, but may have taken his fighting style from his recreational hockey play. Since busting onto the scene he has been known to finish a fight or two. Most famously, Vallely took on 4 frat guys at one time with his fists; luckily it was caught on video. iphone_patent_schematicsApple has a patent application in for a motion-sensitive interface for the iPhone and iPod Touch. According to the application, the clickable parts of the interface increase significantly as the phone is moved.

The motion sensitive interface would be useful if the user moves move to much to and not being able to select different parts of the interface. This could be because the iPhone user is on the run (from the police or just jogging, or whatever). At that point, the interface is automatically adjusted enlarging the icons for example making it easier to select the apps or functions on the iPhone. (more…)

Regardless of how you feel about WowMatrix, many, many players use it to keep their UI up-to-date. Unfortunately for those people, Curse and WowInterface chose today to take concerted efforts to block the use of WowMatrix with the addons they host. You can read their reasoning here, straight out of Kaelten’s and Cairenn’s mouths.

From a running-a-business standpoint, it’s hard to argue that they aren’t justified, but it will nonetheless result in a lot of disappointment and frustration among players. (more…)
